While India celebrates the millionaire shooter who won an Olympic Gold, 61 year old India today witnessed yet another Olympic achievement. Akhil Kumar beat Sergey Vodopyanov (the current world champion) to advance in the Bantamweight 54 Kg category.
So what is so special about this, you ask? DD Sports had a special interview with the young boxer. he thanked his family, his coach, his juniors and his well wishers. He especially thanked Doordarshan.
DD helped him prepare for his bout with the world champion, by recording the Russian’s previous bouts and aiding him in understanding his opponent’s technique. Shudh Hindi mein Akhil ne DD ko thank kiya..
Now dont get me wrong. Sure, DD arranged the interview and had Akhil say this stuff. But the amateurish way it was done only goes to show the honesty behind the interview.
Instead of showing pictures of Akhil’s relatives dancing to celebrate his win, DD is in Beijing with our not-often-encouraged athletes, giving them the much needed technological advantage, and helping them win.
